Maybe my expectations were too high

Ever since I saw this book on a Goodreads cover poll, I knew I had to read it. The premise sounded so amazing, so my expectations were really high.
It did start out really well too and I was sure I was going to love it. I loved the 3 different time perspectives, I also loved all the little maps, pieces of paper etc. in the book. I also enjoyed the story was told, it was kind of unique to me as I haven't read anything similar.
Unfortunately by the end i just missed too much to make the book perfect for me. One thing is that there weren't enough explanations in the end. The other thing that the book couln't emotionally get me. Maybe I started the book with wrong expecations...I expected a heart-breaking love story but the story remained quite neutral and I couldn't feel with the characters.
From the premise of the second book it sounds as we won't meet Matt and Kate again, so this ending leaves me quite unsatisfied.
