Die junge Sektionsassistentin Cassie Raven arbeitet in der Londoner Rechtsmedizin, als sie ihre ehemalige Lehrerin und Mentorin auf den Tisch bekommt. Alles sieht nach einem natürlichen Tod aus, doch Cassie glaubt nicht daran und begibt sich auf eigene Faust auf Spurensuche. Unerwartete Unterstützung erhält sie von der spröden Polizistin DS Phyllida Flyte.
Cassie ist eine sehr interessante Protagonistin. Äußerlich eher wild mit ihrem Undercut und ihren vielen Piercings, hat sie allerdings ein großes Herz, geht mit ihren "Kunden" Sehr respektvoll und einfühlsam um und spricht sogar mit ihnen. Eher das Gegenteil ist Phyllida Flyte, eine Polizistin die anfangs pingelig und übereifrig erscheint, aber sich nach und nach als eine intelligente Ermittlerin entpuppt.
Der Leser wird mit einem lockeren, teilweise humorvollen und bildlichen Schreibstil sehr gut unterhalten. Die immer wieder einfließenden detaillierten Informationen über die Arbeit der Rechtsmedizin sind sehr interessant.
Die Spannung baut sich zuerst langsam auf, aber schnell nahm die Handlungsdichte immer mehr zu, und so konnte mich die Story durch die ausgelegten Spuren und der lebendigen Darstellung in ihren Bann ziehen.
